On this particular day my Grandpa received a call and had to pick up a car on I-40. So, we loaded up in the wrecker and away we went. My Grandpa was a quiet man, so he would let me rattle on about whatever seemed important at 5 years old. That day it was wrinkles. I'm not sure why, but I was perplexed by them. My Grandpa had been in a bad wreck earlier in life that required skin grafts, so he didn't have a lot of wrinkles. Plus, he was 8 years younger than my Grandma. So, when I asked him why Grandma had all those wrinkles and he didn't, in my mind I thought he was being ripped off, he laughed so hard I was startled. He continued to laugh all the way home. When we pulled in, Grandma was home from work. He said "kid, go ask your Grandma about those wrinkles". I didn't understand what kind of response I would get. So, I asked. Her response was classic for her, if you knew her. She said "I ought to kick your little (insert three letter word), and Gene Long, quit your laughing or I'll kick yours too!". Grandpa just laughed more and went back down to the shop. All afternoon Grandma muttered things from the kitchen like "why do I have so many wrinkles, those two smart alecs...." and she'd occasionally call someone and say "you know what Gene and Sarah Leann pulled on me today..." then she'd relay the story.
It took me several years to understand why it aggravated her so much and why Grandpa thought it was so funny.
